Blackberry Buy-in

Ok! So I've had many comments and queries around how the iPhone and Android smartphones compare to the Blackberry ones. If almost everyone, and their uncle has a blackberry, there has to be something to this device, right? Well ... sort of.

I've done a hardware, software and service comparison on the blackberry, android and iPhone smartphones at http://db.tt/IP9JeFcu.

The following things are worth noting from this comparison:

1. Blackberry hardware is really lacking when compared to the iPhone and Android hardware.
2. The iPhone also shows some feature-lacking when compared to Android phones.
3. A number of high performance apps are not designed for the blackberry platform, and focused on Android and iPhone devices.
4. The top Android device does not lack a single feature, except the once-off service offered by blackberry.

It is this fourth point, that makes the blackberry so successful. As much as you may believe that it is the BBM service that makes it so popular, it would not be popular if it wasn't packaged in a monthly fixed cost. Afterall, BBM is an instant messenger which Android and iPhone both offer between their devices too. Android does extend the communication platform to other devices too, being a much more open mobile operating system.

When it comes to deciding on a smartphone, it's either for the phone or the service that comes with it. It is that service that sells blackberry phones. Blackberry packages their smartphones with a fixed monthly fee for data coverage.

If you are looking for a high tech mobile computing device, then maybe an android / iphone is for you, but expect to sell a body part to get one. If your requirements lean more towards the service you get from the device (ie inclusive browsing, IM'ing) then maybe a blackberry is for you. With declining data prices, however, a data bundle and an android phone can give you the best of both worlds.

Being the techie I am, it's always iPhone or Android for me. These devices have ALL the features, just not the one price cost effectiveness of Blackberry.

So, blackberry or Android or iPhone, depends on whether you want phone capability or connection service at a convenient one price.
